Visual work grounded in a lifetime of observation.

The Artist’s Perspective

James works primarily in black and white, drawing with India ink on high-grade watercolour paper. Often described as multidimensional abstracts, his large-scale pieces - 22" x 30" - are designed to stand as striking originals while also lending themselves beautifully to print and framing.

From early on, James has been fascinated by shapes and angles - in architecture, in nature, in door frames and window lines, and in the geometry woven into everyday life. That fascination continues to inform his visual language, where structure and movement intersect.

His Optillusion works invite viewers to look longer and discover more. Layers of line and form create shifting impressions - what one sees depends on where one stands and how one looks. These drawings are meant to engage and intrigue, offering both visual rhythm and quiet complexity.

In many pieces, human faces appear layered or angled against one another. Some eyes are open, some closed, and some absent entirely - reflections on how we witness, ignore, or react to the tensions of the world around us. These works act as mirrors, exploring human response in moments of complacency, surprise, resilience, and reflection.

Ultimately, James draws to entertain, to challenge, and to spark thought. His work is meant to inhabit spaces - homes, offices, galleries - and to invite viewers into their own interpretation.

Reflections on the work: what people are saying

“This is one of my favorites, so I decided to write a paragraph about my reaction to it: This drawing features a series of intertwined faces and profiles. The contrast of black and white flowing lines creates a Taoist yin and yang experience for the viewer.  The faces merge into one another, producing a sense of movement which engages the imagination of the viewer in a surrealistic experience.”

Mike Slater, K.C.

“We selected a piece from James Green's Art Show to adorn out new living space. The bold and lyrical graphic of this piece of art gave us a feeling of 60's jazz character and design from another time. James' use of ink demonstrates the most you can get from the medium. His cast of characters and playful lines create music in their stories. Wonderful.”

“Green’s technique is purposeful and expressive, giving each work a strong visual and emotional presence. His pen strokes and perspective work together to create atmosphere and character. The compositions are direct and effective, supported by a clear and confident artistic voice.” ”

“James' artwork explores the tension between structure and emotion through black and white compositions. The boxy forms and fragmented faces suggest a dialogue between identity and isolation, offering a powerful visual language that feels modern, yet timeless. Its abstract nature made me think and find personal meaning within the contrast and geometry.”

Art Show Walk-Through

This is what the work looks like in a room. James Green's large-format pieces -- black and white India ink on high-grade watercolour paper -- demand to be seen at scale.

Abstract, architectural, and deeply geometric, each work invites the viewer to look again. And again. Shapes emerge, angles shift, and what first appears as a bold composition gradually reveals itself as something far more layered.

Green calls his style Optillusion -- a lifelong fascination with the geometry embedded in everyday life, from door frames to windows to the structural rhythms of the natural world.

The result is work that engages, challenges perception, and rewards time spent in front of it. This walk-through offers a glimpse into one of his Vancouver exhibitions.
